Nouns (İsimler) 2: Both Countable and uncountable nouns

BOTH COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
(Hem sayılabilen hem de sayılamayan isimler)

Bazı isimler, hem “countable” hem de “uncountable” olarak kullanılabilirler. Ancak farklı bir anlam ifade ederler. Aşağıdaki tabloda yaygın olarak kullanılan isimlerin listesi verilmiştir.

· I found a hair in my soup, so I called the waiter.(count)

Bazen de günlük dil yapısı içinde sayılmayan isimleri çoğul olarak ifade edebiliriz. Bu durumda ifade ettiğimiz nesneler daha çok farklı türleri yada markaları ifade eder.

· I would like to have two beers, please. (two glasses of beers)
· We have four soaps. (four kinds of soap)
· We would like to have three ice-creams (three portions of ice cream)
· We have got three cheeses. Which on would you like?
· Some African countries have no enough food to eat.(uncount.)
· Cheese, meat and vegetables are useful foods. (count.)
· Cheese is a rich source of calcium, (uncount.)
· They sell twenty different cheeses in their shop. (count.)

Bazı isimler iki parça dan oluştuklarında dolayı, daima çoğul olarak kullanılır. Bu isimler cümlede özne olarak kullanıldıklarında yüklem çoğul olur.

• jeans,            knickers,        
• pants,            trousers 
• scissors,        tongs 
• gloves,          pincers 
• tights,            scales 
• pyjamas / pajamas

Ancak, Bikini tekil olarak kullanılır.

· My new jeans are so long, I will get them shorten.
· Compasses are essential for geometrical drawings.
· Blunt scissors have spoilt the cloth.
· Scales aren’t used in supermarkets any more.

Bu isimleri tekil de kullanabiliriz, ancak sayı sıfatıyla kullanmak için bir “birime” ihtiyaç duyarız.

· A pair of trousers was bought for my birthday.
· A pair of binocular is needed to see the horce races better.

Bazı isimler genellikle çoğul olarak kullanılır, ve cümlede kullanılan yüklem de çoğul olarak kullanılır.

☺ “Lens” tekil isimdir, çoğul olarak “lenses” olarak ifade edilir. Cattle, folk (=people), people, vermin, tekil olarak ifade edilmesine rağmen daima çoğuldur. “People” – s eki aldığında anlamı halklar / ırklar olur   The peoples on the earth have always wanted peace. Police, clergy, poltry tekil olarak ifade edilmelerine rağmen yüklemi daima çoğuldur.   The police are looking for the terrorists who attacked the UN building in Mali.

Sonu “–s” ile biten bazı cins isimler tekildir, Bu isimlerle kullanılan fiil genellikle tekildir.

Ancak, bazen yukarıda bahsedilen isimlerin farklı yada çeşitli formlarından bahsederken çoğul kullanabiliriz.
