QUANTIFIERS (Miktar Sıfatları)

 İngilizce de miktar belirten sıfatlar niteledikleri isimlerin sayılabilir (countable) veya sayılamaz (uncountable) özeliklerine göre değişebilir veya gruplanabilir. Bazıları her ikisi ile de kullanılabilir. Aşağıda bu yapıyı açıklayan tablo verilmiştir.

QUANTIFIERS USED WITH COUNTABLE NOUNS
(Sayılabilen isimlerle kullanılan miktar sıfatları)

 FEW / A FEW / QUITE A FEW / ONLY A FEW

“A few”, nitelediği nesnenin sayıca az olduğu anlamını verir. “Some” ile hemen hemen aynı anlamda kullanılır. Ancak, “only” ile kullanıldığı zaman nitelediği nesnenin sayıca çok az olduğunu ifade eder. Ayraca, “quite” ile kullanıldığında sayının fazla olduğu anlamını verir ve “many” ile ayni anlamı vermektedir.
  • Since he has got still a few friends in the town, he doesn’t get bored whenever he visits.
  • There are a few people around to help you lift the piano.
  • He had only a few pounds in his pocket, so he went by bus instead of taking a taxi.
  • We have quite a few good boks in our private library

“Few”, nitelediği nesnenin sayıca yetersiz olduğu anlamını verir, “hardly any” anlamında olumsuz bir anlama sahiptir. Tüm diğer sayılan isimlerle kullanılan miktar sıfatlarında olduğu gibi, çoğul isimlerle kullanılır.
  • He has few friends left in the village, so he feel lonely there.
  • We have few eggs. So I can’t make a cake now.

“Few”, bir isim yada zamir ile birlikte“of” edatı ile birlikte tamamla biçiminde de kullanılabilir.
  • Few of us remember much of what we learnt at school.
  • Only a few of students wanted to join the trip, so it was cancelled.

SEVERAL (OF) / A COUPLE OF

 “Several”, nitelediği nesnenin iki ya da üçten daha fazla sayıda olduğunu, belki beş veya on tane kadar olduğunu vurgular. “a couple of” birkaç anlamına gelmektedir. Anlam olarak biri birlerine yakın olduklarından biri birlerinin yerine kullanılabilir.
  • My father has been abroad several times. (Babam birkaç defa yurt dışında bulundu.)
  • I will be absent for a couple of days. (Birkaç hafta burada olmayacağım.)
  • He wanted to borrow several of my books for his research.

MANY / A GOOD MANY / A GREAT MANY

 “Many”, anlam olarak “ a large number of” ile aynidir. Türkçe deki “oldukça fazla, çok” anlamındadır. Hem olumlu; hem olumsuz, hem de soru cümlelerinde kullanılabilir. “A good”, “a great” ile anlamı daha da pekiştirilebilir.
  • He doesn't know many people in the village. (Köyde çok fazla kişiyi tanımaz.)
  • A great many people participated to the to the meeting organised by the Green Party.

“Many +a + singular noun” yapısı tekil bir isim almasına rağmen anlamı çoğuldur. “A lot of” ile ayni anlama gelmektedir. Ancak yüklem olarak tekil kullanılır.
  • Many a woman died in the battles along with men.
  • Many a scientist believes that the remedy for the AIDS will be found very soon.
  • Many a boy wants to start their career in computer business 

“As many as” genlikle şaşkınlık ifade etmek için “……kadar çok sayıda” anlamında kullanılmaktadır.
  • It is believed that as many as 10 percent of New Orleans population died during the Hurricane.

A NUMBER OF/A GREAT NUMBER OF/A LARGE NUMBER OF/A GOOD NUMBER OF

 “A number of”, çok, pek çok anlamına gelen bir yapıdır. “Great, small, large, good” gibi sıfatlarla miktar pekişebilir. Tüm bu ifadeler olumlu cümlelerde kullanılır.
  • We have been to a number of small towns and villages during our trip.
  • There used to be a good number of old beautiful houses here.
  • A large number of people joined to the assassinated writer’s funeral.
  • The government changed a good number of articles in the constitution.

“The number” bir isim olup “of” ile tamlamalarla kullanıldığında bağlı olan cümledeki yüklem tekil olur.
  • The number of university students is increasing in Turkey day by day.
  •  (Universite öğrencisi sayısi Türkiyede günbe gün artiyor.)


A HOST OF / A MULTITUDE OF

Her iki ifade de “çok, pek çok” anlamına gelmektedir “a large number of” ile aynı anlamı taşır.
  • A host of birds migrate to hot places when the winter comes to their habitats.
  • The family went to picnic carrying a multitude of foods, fruits and drinks.
  • A multitude of animals hibernate in order to protect their body temperature.

A VARIETY OF

“Various”, ile ayni anlama sahiptir. “a large number of” gibi kullanılabilir. Hem sayı yönünden hemde çeşitlilik yönünden çokluğu ifade eder.
  • Smoking cigarette causes lung cancer along with a variety of diseases.

NUMEROUS / VARIOUS

Birer sıfat olmalarının yanı sıra işlevleri açısından “quantifiers” gibi tanımlayıcı özelikleri vardır. Hem çokluğu hem de çeşitliliği ifade ederler.
  • There are various plays of Shakespeare to be staged.
  • The disadvantage of watching crime scene on TV are too numerous to discuss.

DOZEN

“bir düzine” anlamına gelmektedir. Önüne “a” yada herhangi bir sayı getirilip pekiştirilebilir.
  • He visited her girlfriend carrying in his hand a dozen of roses.
